One dead after blast rips through Stratford home as police evacuate area

A person has died following an explosion at a home in east London, police said.

Police in Newham said officers were called to Waddington Road at 7.54am on Sunday.

A statement said: “Emergency services have now entered the building and sadly, one person has been pronounced dead.

“We’re working to locate and inform next of kin.

“Road closures remain in place. The incident is not being treated as terror-related.”

Several nearby homes have been evacuated.

An earlier statement confirmed that London Fire Brigade had been called to the scene first, at 7.51am.

The Fire Investigation Unit were at the scene trying to establish the cause of the explosion.

Earlier today, there were reports that one person was being treated for shock after the incident.

It was initially thought that there were no injuries to report, but sadly, police officers have now confirmed otherwise.

Local councillor Joshua Garfield wrote on Twitter: “We are aware of an incident in Stratford that has tragically led to loss of life. Officers and emergency response are on the scene.

“The council are providing support to victims and have rehoused nearby residents. We will get to the bottom of this.”
